    Whereas, In 2014, the AAFP and joint partners including the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, released a report “Interprofessional Study of Oral Health in Primary Care,” that sought to identify elements that lead to successful promotion of oral health services in primary care offices;

    Whereas, Healthy People 2020 made oral health one of its top nine health indicators, yet only 44.5 percent of people age two years and older had a dental visit during the past 12 months, and half of the U.S. seniors perceive their dental health as poor or very poor;

    Whereas, the Institute of Medicine published “Advancing Oral Health in America” in 2011;

    Whereas, the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine’s Smiles for Life Initiative was developed in 2005, is now in its third edition, offering training modules about the relationship of oral to systemic health, pediatric oral health, adult health, acute dental problems, oral health and the pregnant patient, caries risk assessment, the oral examination and geriatric oral health;

    Whereas, Smiles for Life is now the nation’s most comprehensive and widely used oral health curriculum for primary care clinicians;

    Whereas, Smiles for Life is endorsed by the AAFP, the American Academy of Pediatrics, National Association of Community Health Centers, American Dental Association, American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, and other health-care organizations;

    RESOLVED, That the American Medical Association House of Delegates endorse Smiles for Life: A National Oral Health Curriculum.
