History

Organized on February 6, 1954, in Chicago, IL, AAPHP is presently incorporated under the laws of the state of Texas.

Traditionally, AAPHP has served as the voice of physicians who were state and local health directors. We relate to AMA, ACPM, APHA, NACCHO and other professional and public health groups, Congress and other legislative bodies.   AAPHP is represented in the House of Delegates and Section Council on Preventive Medicine in the AMA,  and the Board of Regents of ACPM.

More recently, we have developed an advocacy role on behalf of public health and preventive medicine physicians, wherever they are employed. This is in response to changes in the public health physician job market, and changes in private health care delivery systems.

A number of states have chapters of public health physicians, often as specialty society components within state medical societies, which perform similar activities within states that the AAPHP carries out at the national level.
