Director, Physician Health and Health Care Disparities.

The American Medical Association (AMA) helps doctors help patients by uniting physicians nationwide to work on the most important professional and public health issues.  Working together, the AMA’s quarter of a million physician and medical student members are playing an active role in shaping the future of medicine.  The AMA currently has two career opportunities available in our Professional Standards Group.

DIRECTOR, PHYSICIAN HEALTH AND HEALTH CARE DISPARITIES

As Director of Physician Health and Health Care Disparities, you will provide vision, leadership, direction, and managerial and budgetary oversight for the AMA’s programs on physician health and health care disparities.  Responsibilities include:  1) providing input into AMA's policy development process and influencing AMA's advocacy on health care disparities and physician health issues; 2) developing programs in physician health and health care disparities; 3) overseeing the AMA’s administrative support of the Federation of State Physician Health Programs; 4) overseeing the AMA’s co-sponsorship of the biennial International Physicians Health Conference with the Canadian and British Medical Associations; 5) providing leadership for the AMA’s programs in support of the Commission to End Health Care Disparities; 6) providing administrative support to the Commission’s secretariat and liaison with the National Medical Association and National Hispanic Medical Association; 7) serving as an AMA spokesperson and liaison with other organizations involved in health care disparities and physician health; and 8) enhancing value for AMA members and the medical profession as a whole.

To qualify for this highly visible position you must possess a medical degree (MD/DO) in a relevant field, with board certification.  An additional degree in public health or a related area or 5 years of experience in related activities is required.  You must have expertise or documented interest in disease prevention and health promotion.  Additional expertise in health services research, evaluation, and clinical epidemiology  are preferred.  Proven skills in project development and management are required.  A proven ability to conduct evidence-based reviews, evaluate and synthesize scientific literature, and translate scientific information to applied clinical areas is required.  You must have a proven ability to write scientific or programmatic grants for extramural funding.  Excellent communication and interpersonal skills that permit the individual to work within a team concept are a must, as well as strong conceptual, analytical, and critical thinking skills. Experience in directing professional and support staff to achieve goals; in assessing staff performance; and in managing project budgets are required.  Finally, you must be amenable to occasional travel.
