DIRECTOR, MEDICINE AND PUBLIC HEALTH

As Director of Medicine and Public Health, you will provide vision, leadership, direction, and managerial and budgetary oversight for all AMA programs on preventive medicine and public health issues.  This includes:  1) providing input into the AMA’s  policy development process and AMA’s advocacy efforts on preventive medicine and public health policy; 2) developing preventive medicine and public health programs consistent with the evolving needs of the public and the evidence base; 3) providing physicians and the public with scientific information to improve the health of individuals and populations through the adoption of healthy lifestyles, including smoking cessation, prevention of alcohol overuse, and other drug abuse problems; 4)addressing disparities in health and in the delivery of health care; 5) supporting programs in physician health, care for an aging population, chronic disease management, and violence prevention; 6) serving as the AMA spokesperson and liaison with other organizations on these and other public health issues; and 7) coordinating activities with other AMA and Federation staff on these issues.

Requirements for this position include a doctoral degree (MD, DO, DrPH, or PhD).  An additional degree in public health or a related area or 5 years of experience in related activities is required.  You must have expertise in disease prevention and health promotion.  Additional expertise in health services research, evaluation, and clinical epidemiology is preferred.  Proven skills in project development and management are required.  You must have a proven ability to conduct evidence-based reviews, evaluate and synthesize scientific literature, and translate scientific information to applied clinical areas.  A proven ability to write scientific or programmatic grants for extramural funding is a must.  Excellent communication and interpersonal skills that permit the individual to work within a team concept are required.  You must have strong conceptual, analytical, and critical thinking skills, as well as experience in managing professional and support staff to achieve goals; in assessing staff performance; and in managing budgets.   Finally, you must be amenable to a 20% travel schedule.
